finally, after a period that nears one whole year (a personal record) i decided to cut my hair.
originally i wanted to keep it at least until balik mesia...so that my family & friends will go, "wahh zaid, is that really you? macho nyeee!" perasan.
but my mop were getting in my face too much. literally. so i had it cut two weeks ago...i've no regrets, mind you.
benefits of having short hair:-
1. i can actually see the ball when playing footie, hence my game improved considerably. kalo sblm ni tahap ronaldo, skrg tahap messi plak.
2. my hair don't keep falling into the bowl when eating cornflakes.
3. people don't mistake me for a bleedin' gurl anymore.
4. toksah syampu lama2 every two days or so.
5. ditto with hair gel.
6. i don't look like maya karin from that pontianak movie in the mornings.
7. friends say i look much more handsome, eceh!
7. my family can recognize me at senai airport nnt.

Jika kau kecewa
Pandanglah ke sungai
Airnya mengalir biarpun
Berjuta batu menghalang.
Jika kau sedih
Pandanglah ke langit
Kau akan sedar bahawa
Allah sentiasa bersamamu.

sitting alone in lewin lab, reading up and doing research for my boring dissertation project, i was more than happy to oblige when tagged by zakri in his blog. so people, tag me more often! (tapi bagitau la...i don't blogsurf that often ya knoww)
1 minit yang lalu, apa anda buat?
type email to my professor to provide some documents for my research sbb cari tak jumpe. tak jadi send sbb baru terjumpa.
1 hari yang lalu, apa anda buat?
nothing of note. oh ye pi talk on "palestine, the right to return". amazed to see so many non-muslim mat saleh supporters of palestine there.
1 hari lagi, apa anda akan buat?
pi summer camp MSM di yorkshire dale bersama ikhwah sheffield.
1 orang yang terakhir menelefon kamu?
bro najib.
1 makanan yang baru dibeli?
lemon meringue pie from gregg's. nyum nyum.
1 barang yang baru hilang?
selipar nike ku yg kene curi di cairo (huhu). tp kelmarin ganti baru...
1 cerita yang baru ditonton?
the forbidden kingdom with jackie chan & jet li. baru nengok halfway.
1 hal yang terakhir digosipkan?

the far method
|
|
in data communications, a widely used method of convolutional code decoding is the trellis diagram and viterbi search. trellis diagram refers to a sequential state machine with respect to time; that is, the state transition and output are recorded for each time period. this produces a table from which we can correctly determine (and therefore correct) error locations in a received bit stream via viterbi search. the applications of convolutional codes however are limited: its implementation is based almost entirely on low SNR and low power circuits with up to just 3 shift registers, which cater to a maximum of 8 states and code rate, R = 1/2.
the viterbi algorithm is a popular search method that aims to find the best i.e. shortest path through the table. it scrolls through each received bit column selecting the best node (one with the shortest hamming distance) from a predecessing bit. the shortest nodes are then combined to produce the shortest path, the viterbi path.
c(x) = min{(Si * r(x))}
where c(x) is the corrected sequence, Si the states and r(x) the received sequence.
trellis diagram & viterbi search
normally the process above is tedious and time consuming - we have to calculate for each column two possible input bits 0 or 1, thus predicting two outcome states. this search method is propagated for every subsequent column and therefore generates a total of 2*47 = 94 operations for an 8 symbol received sequence and 8 states.
2 -- 2*2 -- 2*4 -- 2*8 -- 2*8 -- 2*8 -- 2*8 -- 2*8
fortunately for us the far method (FM), named after its creator ahmad farieth from the university of sheffield, greatly reduces the workload for viterbi decoding. using FM we only need to consider at each column the best current path, effectively discarding the longer distanced paths at that time. this method presents us with a minimum of 2*8 = 16 operations.
2 -- 2 -- 2 -- 2 -- 2 -- 2 -- 2 -- 2
of course this is not always the case, as the shortest distance at that particular node may not lead to the shortest path overall, therefore the obvious alternative step is to revert to the predecessing column and select the next shortest node. our tests have since shown a high degree of likelihood of achieving the viterbi path, hence deriving the correct received sequence.
the author with farieth
according to farieth, the idea came to him during a group study period at a friend's room. "ah! i just don't bother...too many operations doo," were the inspirations behind his ingenious method. the FM has proved popular among the students of digital communications. a question on viterbi coding came out during this semester's exams and most have benefited from the fast calculations that he introduced. though whether the course lecturer Dr benaissa agrees with the method remains to be seen.

some lingo i learnt in cairo:
ma'alij = sorry ('ammi). dun say asif or afwan (fus'hah) coz you'll get perplexed looks.
bukrah = "i'm terribly sorry but i cannot process your application today due to the fact that frankly i can't be bothered. do come back tomorrow morning and see if i can be bothered then. yes i know this must be irritating for you but that's just how we do things around here...so tough cookie, mate." err actually it literally means "tomorrow morning" aje.
ismu 'ali = branded
hamam fiin? = "tandas mane ek?" again, dun say "ana uridu an azhaba ila dauratul miah" coz you'll get laughed in the face.
kapten/ra'is/'ammu/sodiq/akhi/sheikh/habib = bro/mat/beb/pakcik/geng/dude etc etc.
aiwah = yes. ditto with the fushah & ammi thing.
regal = boys. it's supposed to say "rijal" but egyptians replace J with G. they also replace Q with A, mind you.
