the ikhwah and akhawat of UTM outdid themselves with a splendid outing at pesta konvo! our gerai, MaDaNi SToP was a huge hit among pengunjung...we sold spaghetti bolognese, nasi beryani pakcik jamaluddin, nasi maclooba arab mari, laksa authentic kuala perlis, nasi lomak ayam, nasi dagang, soto, and the very special ice blended drinks (mocha, cadbury choc, mango, apple, tembikau, nenas, oren, honeydew etc etc) courtesy of salman's brilliant idea.
made wads of cash too, hehe.
old friends came and stopped by our stall: sabiq, shaherwan, bbdk form 5, bbdk form 3, pakcik2 dan makcik2, ustaz-ustazah SMIH, even UTM's TNC prof alias! i would like to exagerrate and say KRU and INTEAM visited our gerai also, but naaah...no one would fall for that, would they?

mawi world..?
|
|
in a desperate bid to win over the hearts and minds of the muslim community in malaysia, akademi fantasia has transgressed, compounded and downright blurred the sacred border between religion and entertainment. the only problem is that instead of having "religious entertainment" a la the nasyid industry nowadays, they've opted for the more "entertaining religion" approach. propesterous.
this season, one particular candidate stood out head and shoulders above the rest, because of his so-called "religious" style. the mole-infested cretin mawi is by far the most popular student of AF3. girls everywhere adore him, the judges are starkly in favour of him, there are even special t-shirts of mawi sold at petaling street and uptown. heck, it even looks like us footie buffs would have to quarrell with female AF-anatics over viewing rights every saturday night at alipp. i cannot even begin to comprehend as to the how's and the why's of this extremely absurd mawi phenomenon. good looks? hm, to say that he is handsome would be a gross overstatement. the guy is bald, for god's sake! good voice? oh, puh-leeze...me, ahmad, a frog and jennifer lopez combined sound better than this guy. the only time i would invite him to sing is when my grandma's crops and paddy fields at kampung need watering.
so what makes the mawi-world brand so marketable then? what is this boy's true appeal that the country's magazines, TV and even newspapers are so eager to exploit? well, it's simple really: his religious background, and all the charms that come with it. he's the only contestant in the history of the academy to have deeniyah and qari credentials under his belt. now, that goes a long way to enhance his reputation among the 'chicks and rockers' world of AF. the producers see it as a positive move to bring about islamic exposure towards the ever demanding public. oh yes, ex-guru agama with heavenly tarannum skills comes to AF with a dream to prove that "his kind of people" could also succeed. this is the modern method of dakwah, they claim. kena terjun dalam masyarakat. niat mawi baik. mawi tak suke pakai shorts. mawi dah bertunang. mawi slalu nyanyi lagu nasyid dalam konsert AF3. hari tu kan mawi nyanyi lagu intifadhah rabbani...
what a plank. what machiavellian doctrine has he read in order to promote this "ends justifying means" dastardly philosophy? what you're doing is still wrong by far, my dear boy. i'm talking about the dressing-nak-kalahkan-najib-ali, pergaulan bebas, bersentuhan, berpelukan, berdua-duaan, jiwang karat, melodrama, memuji dan memuja dan hatta meredhai kesemua itu. i almost feel sorry for this guy. his intentions may have been clear, but the way he sets about realizing it has inadvertently compromised his own faith and beliefs. orang suruh terjun dalam lautan masyarakat ler macha, bukannye menyelam dan tenggelam ke dasar laut sampai lemas kat bawah tu. maybe the word "hypocrite" would be too harsh for this soft-spoken, mild mannered young man from kulai...but when your johan qari leaves against his ailing mother's wishes to pursue his singing aspirations, joining the idolistic AF no less, that just smacks of parodical pretence.
a suggested reason behind this whole new vogue is that the malaysian public, muslims in particular, tend to view mawi as the epitome of islam hadhari. in a sense, they want the inculcation of islamic elements in music, entertainment and such...but not "too much" as to be confused with the nasyid genre. to them, mawi seems like a perfect fusion of yassin, aznil nawawi and anuar zain: bold and charismatic, charming, honest and skillful. the ultimate, model artiste.
but therein lies the problem: the proponents of islam hadhari itself does not share such sentiments. in fact, during the UMNO general assembly last month, puteri UMNO delegates has overlooked the popular AP issue entirely to concentrate on AF and mawi. according to one of its chiefs, AF's singing, dancing and SMS voting are examples of the hedonistic culture that is so prevalent among our society today. puteri have therefore taken a firm stance to distance and disassociate themselves from this "cause of moral decadence".
you know, i might even have approved if the likes of fitri or hafiz UNIC or some other nasyid wannabes (read: nalury & companions) join the competition instead of mawi. at least they're proud to show their islamic traits, carrying a goodwill message and image of islam to the society. now honest to god, i see nothing islamic at all about mawi. he's just a pain to watch. i really don't understand what the fuss is all about. just for the sake of argument, i'd honestly rather he be voted out of the show and let the real chicks and rockers assume the carrying of the AF3 flag. at least they ain't trying to represent themselves in a different light.
it has been said in the hadith of our prophet s.a.w, "Allah hanya akan menerima amal yang memenuhi dua kriteria, iaitu ikhlas dan muhsin. ikhlas adalah kita melakukan amalan itu semata-mata untuk keredhaan Allah, dan muhsin pula adalah amalan itu kita lakukan dengan cara yang baik dan betul."
mawi is a pathetic excuse for dakwah islamiyah. and all those who follow and idolise him are no better. rant over.
"isteri idaman mawi mesti yang beragama. mawi nak perempuan yang bertudung, beradab, blah blah blah..." gimme an effing break.

last weekend was one of the most hectic period i've ever experienced! starting from my last day at practical training...boss kata nak bagi farewell present. rupe2nye kena paint the walls of atama tech! hampeh. but we had fun nonetheless.
malam tu pulak i went out for a celebratory dinner wif friends...pegi visit abg wan the technician's house kat permas jaya. lepas tu gi makan seafood kat kg senibong. afterwards singgah danga bay layan ABC pulak. phew, sampai umah kul 2am.
saturday morning ade pulak match friendly versus SMIH under-16. thankfully we edged this thriller 3-2. heheh
petang sabtu ade program khidmat msykt JIM kat ladang ulu tiram. went there as AJK along wif my alumni mates. nasyid group saffone and dr harlina were there too, u know. feels good to contribute towards the society once in a while.

last weekend should be, without doubt, one of the most gruelling episodes in these kids' short-lived lives. imagine, kena kawad dlm tasik...! pastu they were dragged back up and kena kawad tiarap pulak. star jump, push-ups, BASED tak citer lg tu. waktu malam kena jalan dlm hutan sorang2. whilst siang it was bloody sweltering hot one second and tetiba rain pouring down the next. and throughout camping derang kena masak sendiri. pergh.
see pics to believe.

fifa 2005
|
|
date: 16th may 2005
venue: streamex cyber cafe, tmn universiti
time: 11.30pm (lewat dah...esok nak keje)
players: salman & ubai as brazil VS bey & zaid as england
the stakes couldn't be higher...two alumni seniors fighting to maintain their pride and honour are up against their junior pretenders to the FIFA2005 crown. this inaugural friendly match is actually anything but, with both teams competing for the order and glory of the gaming nation.
england, starting out as underdogs, surprised everyone right from the start with some sublime possession football. in the 10th minute, dyer was fouled 25 yards out from goal. beckham took the resulting free kick, curled the ball superbly past the wall, it hit the underside of the bar, and landed in goal. pure class from the captain...1-0.
the rest of the first half became a tense game of cat and mouse, both teams trading blows and crunching tackles but never really troubling either goal. brazil was many times frustrated when their passes failed to reach ronaldo and kaka. as the half-time whistle blew, england walked off the happier side.
it didn't last long, though. second half saw the introduction of adriano for brazil and the england defence suddenly began to look troubled. one attacking move after another, brazil deservedly equalised through the magic of (who else?) ronaldinho. 1-1 it became, and the samba boys were immediately handed the psychological advantage.
england continued to dominate the midfield, their quick passes finding out the wingers. but as always, the crosses failed to deliver. as the game wore on, england were desperate for that winning goal. sol campbell ran beyond the halfway line, while lampard and gerrard were leaving their positions to play attacking midfield.
then came the sucker punch. in the 80th minute brazil's dida saved an owen shot, kicked it far upfield to ronaldinho, who dribbled easily past neville. he looked up, saw ronaldo and adriano up front with only john terry guarding the defence. three against one: england had committed suicide. a threaded pass to ronaldo and one quick shot later, brazil lead 2-1.
england played their hearts out, hoping for a miracle. and by god, what a miracle it was! in stoppage time, owen received a pass from beckham, dribbled through the entire brazillian defence before slotting coolly past the keeper. it was amazing, the crowd couldn't believe it. the players couldn't believe it. they were shouting and cursing and slapping. 2-2, extra time beckons.
the moment of truth came in the second half of extra time. england got a corner, beckham whipped the ball in and with his marker sleeping, rooney easily headed home the winner. brazil pressed on in the very end, and could've scored on a final note too. but luck was still clinging onto the three lions, the goalmouth scramble they managed to clear away.
so 3-2 to england it finished, well done bey and zaid. salman, ubai, try harder next time aight!
